Food Storage and Clean Water

Everybody has the right to clean, drinkable water.
It’s something that many of us take for granted, but the reality for some people in Nicaragua is not so straightforward.
The Sandinista government has prioritised access to water and now over 90% of the population has access to clean drinking water but there are still some areas in Puerto Morazan with no direct municipal water supply. The government sends in water tankers two or three times a week and well water is also treated in the water containers FoM provides for some schools. In the past FoM has provided classroom drinking water using filters but this is no longer needed.

FoM also funds food containers to store the UN World Food Programme rice, beans and maize which is distributed by the government every three months. The containers keep the food free from pests and the parents take it in turns to cook the food each day. All Nicaraguan children now receive free school meals during term-time thanks to a Sandinista government initiative.

Friends of Morazan used to install water filters in classrooms but no these are no longer needed thanks to government investment in clean drinking water systems.
